X-Ray diffraction analysis of mixed colloids

Abstract

The main aim of this study was to find out to what extent the concentration of cationic n-dodecylamine nitrate DAN and/or anionic sodium n-dodecyl sulphate SDS surfactants influence the ratio between hexagonal H and cubic C type of negative colloid AgI particles prepared by dilution of AgI complex in NaI solution by pouring into DAN and/or SDS solutions of different concentrations. Using x-ray diffraction data it has been shown that the cubic modification of negative colloid silver iodide sol particles are predominantly formed with C=89±2%. Concluded was that SDS could be effective only as a neutral stabilization ion. Meanwhile, in an aqueous solution containing cationic surfactant DAN the part of cubic AgI modification decreases with DAN concentrations increasing: 87% C at 0.00001 mol DAN/dm3, 17% C at 0.0001 mol DAN/dm3, and 15% C at 0.001 mol DAN/dm3. The x-ray diffraction data direct us to very sensitive mutual interactions between primary AgI particles and different DAN associate structure present.
