1G laboratory-scale shaking table tests on reduction of liquefaction damage in sand using short gravel compaction piles

This study proposes the use of short gravel compaction piles in residential foundations to reduce the liquefaction damage of sand, based on the results of 1G laboratory-scale shaking table tests. In these tests, we focused on the evaluation of liquefaction damage reduction of the short gravel piles in the ground where the liquefiable layer is extremely deep. Consequently, we investigated cases in which the gravel piles did not reach the non-liquefiable layer. From these results, it can be observed that gravel piles played a role in reducing liquefaction because of compaction and drain effects in the ground improvement area. The decreases in the settlement and differential settlement of the structure model were observed with the widening of the construction area. Also, a significant improvement in reduction of differential settlement of structure model was observed with the covering gravel piles by horizontal gravel layer at the ground.
