Differences in the Behavior of Tourist Expenditure According to the Sports Category of the Event: Evidence for a Master and Absolute Championship

Abstract

The organization of sporting events represents an opportunity for the development of metropolitan tourism and economy. Strategic and management elements must be considered in selecting the appropriate type of event to obtain efficient results. In this project we analyze the variables that influence two swimming events of different categories. We also identify the respective socio-demographic and tourist variables that generate a significant impact on tourism expenditure. The spending behavior of attendees and participants in the superior sport category event resulted in an injection of lower tourist expenditure in this event. Our findings determine the importance of the strategic approach, particularly the alignment of the strategic objectives of the city with the selection of potential events, in the development of sports tourism.
