Abstract

In this chapter we introduce a new and very important network structural invariant—so-called cumulative destruction spectrum (CD-spectrum). This parameter allows to investigate network behaviour when the network is subject to a flow of external “shocks” which randomly destroy network elements (nodes or edges). We illustrate the use of the CD-spectrum by analysing and comparing the behaviour of two small transportation networks having the same number of nodes, edges and terminals but differ in their structure. Section 6.3 is devoted to another structural invariant—the so-called BIM-spectrum. Using this spectrum becomes possible to range network elements (nodes or edges) by their importance. The chapter is concluded by describing in detail a Monte Carlo algorithm for computing the CD-spectrum and the BIM-spectrum.
