Chapter
Part of the How the World Compares book series (HWC)

Abstract

How America Compares offers data and analysis on an encyclopedic range of social indicators, comparing the United States with 17 other politically stable, economically affluent democracies. Occasionally, there are more global perspectives, but most of the book examines commonalities and contrasts among these advanced democracies. The chapter examines the growing educational attainments of these populations, and looks at expenditure on education at different levels. It also highlights the performance of these countries in reading, numeracy and science among secondary school students, primary students and adult competencies.
