Finite Zero Butterworth and Chebyshev Filters

An accurate expression is derived for the minimum order of a finite-zero Butterworth filter (Dutta Roy in IEEE Trans AU-19(1):58–63, 1971) [1], which has a steeper cut-off slope than the corresponding Chebyshev filter (Agarwal and Sedra in IEEE Trans AU-20(2):138–141, 1972) [2]. The inaccuracy occurring in the latter is illustrated by a numerical example.
