Abstract

We set out to write this book for like-minded people – those who were interested in using statistics in educational research and who needed a helping hand in doing so. In many educational sub-fields there is a tendency to preference qualitative methods (well, speaking as a visual arts education researcher Julia knows most of the studies she reads are qualitative in nature), but each methodology has its merits and it is important to select a method that suits the research aims, even if it can be a bit daunting at first (and yes, imagine us as fairly stereotypical visual arts and English teachers/researchers who thought it would be a good challenge to learn statistics – naturally, we were terrified).
