Silence Awaiting Sound: The Space of the Imagination
Introducing the themes of the book, we begin with an interrogation of the notion of silence and an examination of its facets. Apparent silence is the imaginative blank canvas upon which our sonic responses are built. The sound of a bell as both metaphor and exercise for the mind is a key, taking us to a borderland full of possibility. John Cage questions the notion of total silence. We examine the relationship and differences between silence and stillness, the art of listening and the problems of detecting the minutiae of sound within the clamour of the modern world. Sound and silence made visible, as in the paintings of Edward Hopper, and the partnership between the eye and the ear opens the door to our imaginative sound journey.
