Fostering Agency to Enhance Learning and Working with Mobile Technology

In this chapter, we revisit the book’s key arguments focusing on: (1) the ways in which workplace learning can be seen as a hybrid learning and practice space extended by mobile technology; and (2) the development of agentic learners and practitioners so that they are better able to deal with the challenges and the opportunities created by the entanglement of learning, working and technology. We then argue that there is a need to draw on more than one perspective to gain a deeper and richer insight into why and how to use mobile technology to enhance learning and work. Using the two complimentary ideas of ‘professional-plus’ and ‘deliberate professional’, we show how socio-material and critical realist perspectives can provide a more comprehensive understanding of how to foster agentic knowledge and dispositions to help learners and practitioners make the most of mobile technology in and for learning and work.
