This chapter particularly focuses on the role of women in contemporary China. Kai, as the fourth daughter, grew up with three younger boys, whom she was expected to look after when she was not at school. As Kai was still living at home after Chun married, she observed the problems facing a young wife as she came to live with the family. Kai and Lan helped each other as they sought to adapt to family traditions in a modernizing China. After her own marriage, Kai became more concerned about the issues of women in society and became the chair of the Countryside Women’s Federation. In this role, she was actively concerned about the difficulties facing many women in the countryside and also the left-behind children.
