Śabda in Vaiśeṣika

Chapter

Abstract

This chapter aims at expounding and examining the nature of śabda (word) in the Vaiśeṣika system as a means of valid knowing (pramāṇa), although its status as an attribute (guṇa) will also be referred to herein. In the original Vaiśeṣika of Kaṇāda, śabda was neither enumerated as a separate attribute nor assigned the status of an independent pramāṇā. Praśastapāda added it to the list of attributes, and one of his commentators, Vyomaśiva, established for the first time that śabda is an independent means of knowing.
