Abstract

In 1991, a student carrying a riding saddle came to my office at Stanford University to seek some advice. She told me her parents were Japanese, but she was born and raised in Costa Rica. Having just returned from two years in Japan with my family, my older daughter was struggling to catch up with science class in middle school; she was also taking horseback-riding lessons at the university stables. I asked this student if she could tutor my daughter, and she replied yes.
