Businesses in Downtown Clarksdale
For many years Downtown Clarksdale was the social and economic hub for the community through the provision of retailing and other services, and the availability of a wide range of community facilities and amenities.
Over time, Downtown experienced a decline in the number of businesses, trade area population, retail sales, and the loss of businesses to South State Street on the edge of town. This decline reflected the town’s diminishing economic role and falling population numbers, as well as the growth in competition from larger towns and cities.
Although Downtown Clarksdale today captures only a very small market share of available retail spending of trade area residents, it now attracts tourists, with tourism emerging as an important and expanding market that contributes to new growth in local businesses and jobs, besides providing services and amenities for the enjoyment of local residents.
