Did an Introduction of a New Subway Line Increase the Frequency of Visits to City Center?

Abstract

This study verified the increase in the frequency of visits to the city center commercial district of Fukuoka City caused by the introduction of the new subway line for the residents who live in the area along the subway line. To do this, the survey was conducted targeting university students after the opening of the subway to obtain the retrospective panel data in which the respondents answered retrospectively their behaviors before the opening of the subway as well as the present behaviors after the opening. The comparison of the frequency of visits before and after the opening becomes the analysis of difference in difference which verified the increase in the visit frequency.
