Abstract
With the ever-growing data rate of 1 TB or more in vehicular sensing and communication in intelligent transportation system, millimeter wave is a promising candidate for meeting the requirement of joint operation of radar and communication. In millimeter wave, the high path loss may be compensated by adaptive beam formation. Because of very short wavelength, it supports the use of massive antenna arrays at both the vehicle in motion and base stations at roadside unit. Millimeter-wave radars are commonly used nowadays in autonomous driving, traffic efficiency, road safety. The same hardware may be shared with communication. This sharing of hardware effectively reduces cost/size and makes efficient spectrum usage. On one side, IEEE 802.11ad mmW is a better candidature for radar with good ranging and parameter estimation, and on the other side, the target information can directly be used for communication. In our work, we have demonstrated a comprehensive development of intelligent millimeter-wave sensing and communication working simultaneously. We have shown the beam tracking by the variation of beam steering angle with the distance and the resulting decreased BER.
