First Metatarsophalangeal Arthroscopy

With advancements in cutting-edge technologies, minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques are continuing to evolve to approach this condyloid joint which is a frequent source of disease. Since Watanabe’s description in 1972 [1], although scarce, treatment of various pathologies such as pigmented villonodular synovitis [2–4], hallux rigidus [2, 5], hallux valgus [6–8], osteochondral lesions [2, 9, 10], sesamoiditis [11, 12], and gouty tophi [4, 13–15] has been reported in the past. The understanding of surgical approaches and available portals will allow surgeons to strategically address specific lesions while minimizing postoperative pain and complications.
