Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) as the New Hope

Abstract

Facing huge resource constraints, agricultural science and technology has been highly emphasized by almost all China’s policies related to agricultural and food security. To most of the policymakers and grain experts, China’s agricultural resources limitation can only be largely conquered by innovating yield-augmenting techniques, particularly the development of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). While the central government has been very supportive of GM technology and GM food, public skepticism about the benefits of GM crops has grown in China. This chapter intends to shed light on the complicated nature of the GM food controversy in China, and offer some preliminary observations of the future of GM crops in China and the potential domestic and international implications.
