Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a principal source of food for more than half of the world population, and its cultivation provides income and employment to more than 100 million households in Asia and Africa (FAO 2004). During 2015–2016, the global rice production touched 474.02 million tons. Approximately 52% of the global production of rice is lost annually owing to the damage caused by biotic factors (Yarasi et al. 2008). More than 100 species of insect pests attack the rice crop in vegetative and reproductive stages; however, only one fourth of it are considered as serious pests (Khush 1997; Sogawa et al. 2003) in different agroclimatic zones. The species complex is known to vary in abundance and distribution from locality to locality and from year to year, and in India approximately 21–51% yield losses have been estimated due to moderate to serious incidence of stem borers, gall midge, planthoppers and other sporadic pests (Pasalu et al. 2004) (Table 2.1).
