Abstract

The information on the use of herbs in various traditional medical practices has greatly contributed toward the discovery of effective lead molecules against diseases. During the last few decades, many plants have been studied for their various pharmacological properties, and wide ranging research evidences suggest their immense therapeutic potential. Since time immemorial, the plant Ocimum sanctum Linn., generally referred to as tulsi or holy basil, has been widely used in different systems of folk medicines of India for treating various diseases and ailments. Tulsi consists of several bioactive phytocompounds, such as flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids, tannins, and phenolics. Scientific investigations have revealed a diverse range of pharmacological properties including antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiamoebic, antidiarrheal, antiplasmodial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, antiasthmatic, analgesic, antiulcer, wound healing anticancer, and cancer-chemopreventive activities. In this chapter, an attempt is made to summarize the diverse beneficial activities and avenues of tulsi for future research in cancer.
