Glycyrrhetinic acid is extracted from liquorice, which is an important compound in liquorice. Glycyrrhetinic acid plays a role in anti-inflammatory, antiulcer activity, and antioxidation. Glycyrrhetinic acid also has an antiviral effect, antitumor effect, and antiarrhythmic effects. In addition, glycyrrhetinic acid functions as an anticholinesterase, anticoagulant, anti-tetanus toxin; it also improves inner ear hearing and improves absorption of insulin. However, its pseudoaldosteronism effect restricts clinical application, and it needs further study to develop new drugs.
