Abstract

Large-scale caisson has been applied in many long-span bridges in China. Five representative examples of large-scale caisson were described briefly in this study to show application status of large-scale caisson in China. To illuminate the sinking process and development law of the stress and strain of large-scale caisson, the construction monitoring of south anchorage caisson of Maanshan Yangtze River Highway Bridge were introduced and monitored results were analyzed simply. The results show that construction monitoring is a good way to provide important information for designers and constructors and to prevent accidents from occurring. Although there is a gap between monitoring results and expected results, caissons are safe because of the existence of safety factor. In order to overcome drawbacks of traditional large caisson, such as huge volume, high cost, and so on, a rooted-caisson foundation was put forward.
