Abstract

Education, often seen as a means of ideological control and economic development, gains socio-political importance in transitional societies. This chapter reviews the literature on planned education reform and transitional societies, before introducing five major theories of social change – structural-functionalism, conflict theory, globalization, democratization, and game theory – to help explain the impact of changing social structures, technology, economics, and international factors on education reform.
