Abstract

So far in Part II we have emphasized informal teacher learning, discussing how a great deal of professional growth comes through everyday activities, especially in the classroom but also in other settings. We turn now to formal PD, which of course can also have a major impact. By providing an “ outside perspective” it can introduce teachers to ideas and strategies they wouldn’t otherwise have arrived at. Also, by spreading similar ideas across a school, school district, or larger system, it can help bring consistency and continuity to students’ learning experiences.
