This chapter and the next explore the dilemmas around the professional role of the helping practitioner in education which is the second theme of this book. Using educational psychologists as a starting point, the question what is it that caring professionals do is asked. This is expanded to the question how one can see the effects of the work of the educational psychologist and other caring professionals, and furthermore how to evaluate such work, since the discussion indicates that there is not one standard way of noting success.
