The distribution of responsibilities and tasks between the different members of a farming family expresses the organic links between the family and the unit of production. Indeed, these links are the main characteristic of family farms. This symbiotic organization not only distinguishes family farming from other types of organizations of production, but also imparts to it originality in its functioning and behaviour in relation to markets and other institutions. The fundamental aspect of such a family organization revolves round the allocation of labour for undertaking agricultural and non-agricultural production activities and domestic responsibilities. But it also clearly transcends them to encompass all strategies concerning consumption, investment, accumulation and reproduction. Family organization is the alchemy that gives a form to the farming collective, which governs individual rights, duties and behaviours for the benefit of the collective.1Thus, a more or less significant...
