The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands consist of five island groups (Snares, Bounty, Antipodes, Auckland, and Campbell) in the Southern Ocean southeast of New Zealand. The Snares and Bounty Island groups are formed of basement granite and metamorphic rocks. The three more southerly groups are of basic volcanic rocks. They have been extensively glaciated. The islands display a pattern of immigration of species, diversification, and emergent endemism and are remarkable for their high level of biodiversity, population densities, and endemism in birds, plants, and invertebrates, which are unique to the islands. The group of islands is the most remote protected area of New Zealand and includes some of the world’s least-modified islands.
