Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, South Africa

The Cape Floral Region in South Africa is one of the richest areas for plants in the world and one of the world’s great centers of terrestrial biodiversity. It represents less than 0.5% of the area of Africa but is home to nearly 20% of the continent’s flora. The site displays outstanding ecological and biological processes associated with the fynbos, a shrubland vegetation adapted to Mediterranean climate and to periodic fires, which is unique to the Cape Floral Region. The outstanding diversity, density, and endemism of the flora are among the highest worldwide and are of outstanding value to science. The property is formed by parks, nature reserves, wilderness, and protected areas. The landscape is characterized by mountains, stepped surfaces, valleys, and coastal sites, such as the Cape of Good Hope. It is also the zone where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian Ocean.
