Abstract
True resistance to barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV), as indicated by a reduction in virus multiplication within the plant, has not been reported in wheat, but exists in wheat relatives such as Thinopyrum intermedium. Ongoing research at CIMMYT aims at incorporating that resistance into high yielding bread wheat using TC14 lines (Banks et al., 1995) that carry a Th. intermedium translocation conferring BYDV resistance.
A simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker, gwm37, identified by Ayala et al. (2000) shows polymorphism between TC14 lines and bread wheat. To incorporate the alien-derived resistance into BYD tolerant high yielding bread wheat germplasm, plants were selected in the F4 for: 1) BYD resistance, as indicated by low virus titers in ELISA and by presence of the Th. intermedium translocation detected with gwm37, and 2) for BYD tolerance, based on the intensity of symptoms.
This paper presents and discusses results obtained using the new improvement strategy that combines molecular markers and traditional selection methodologies.
