Abstract

I have been given the task to give an introductory lecture about the function of the secondary plant substances (allelochemicals) in the coevolution of plants and insects. This I consider neither possible nor necessary in the context of this symposium which deals with a particular aspect of this problem, that of the specificity of bruchid beetles on leguminous seeds. Ever since I introduced the concept of the biological role of these substances (1959), there have been about a dozen books dealing largely or entirely with this subject, about 10 symposia, and literally hundreds of individuals articles. It is entirely beyond my capabilities to give a comprehensive account of this subject at this occasion.
