Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure: Physical Principles and Data-Analysis

Abstract

In this paper the physical principles of EXAFS spectroscopy will be given. The methodology of EXAFS data-analysis is discussed with a special emphasis on how to detect a low Z scatterer in an EXAFS spectrum of a particular sample, which is dominated by high Z scatterers. This problem is typical for structural investigations on platinum electrodes in fuel cells, where Pt atoms on the surface of the platinum metal particles interact with substrate atoms of the electrolyte.
