Abstract
The surface texture or roughness of quartz sand grains has been examined with scanning electron microscopy in the secondary electron mode. Information obtained is used to define sedimentary environments and, to a lesser extent, post-depositional or diagenetic conditions. Sands from modern depositional environments were initially examined, and the features characteristic of specific environments were classified. These features were then reproduced in laboratory experiments to produce textural confirmation of modern environments and to provide new insights into origin mechanisms.
The technique was then used to define ancient sedimentary environments, generally in conjunction with other techniques. A number of applications in the field of sedimentology and other sciences are indicated. These include stratigraphy, structure, planetary geology, forensic sciences and soil science.
