Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Stability of Brazed Metal/Ceramic Systems
Abstract
In this study titanium to alumina and 316 stainless steel to silicon nitride brazed joints were produced by using active filler metals in the Ag-Cu-Ti system. The main aims of the work were to show the need for the implementation of metal/ceramic (M/C) joints degradation studies and to try to relate those results with the respective microstructures and attained bond strength. The degradation behaviour of the M/C joints was assessed by means of electrochemical techniques, namely the measurement of the corrosion potential as a function of time and potentiodynamic polarisation experiments. For a particular system (aimed at being used in automobile parts) the degradation behaviour was assessed by immersing the joints in a lubricant at 60°C. After immersion aliquots of the solutions were analysed by FTIR and the joints were mechanically tested (shear stress up to fracture). The fracture surfaces were then studied using SEM/EDS and XRD.
