Abstract

The downfall of La Rochelle and the capitulation signed at Alais marked the final defeat of Calvinism as a political party and as a state within the state. Richelieu’s centralizing policies triumphed at last. He left the Huguenots no vestige of their former military power. Nimes, Montauban, Castres, and the other towns which had been the rallying places for the rebels lost their cherished municipal privileges; the walls of the captured cities were thrown down, their cannon removed. Henceforth, the Huguenots had to content themselves with religious liberty and civil equality with Catholics.
