Abstract
Environmental hydrology is a developing area within the science of hydrology which seeks to apply the knowledge, skills and techniques of scientific and engineering hydrology to the understanding and solution of environmental problems. In this sense environmental hydrology is complementary to a range of other disciplines, particularly aquatic ecology and biology, which seek to study freshwater aquatic systems for the purposes of their better management towards sustainable ecological goals. In this chapter we deal with river hydrology, an important subset of environmental hydrology.
