Abstract
This paper presents two indices developed for drought monitoring purposes. In a first step, the need for drought monitoring and analysis in Hungary is demonstrated against the climatic background of the region. In the following, the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) are briefly described and their monitoring capabilities are demonstrated for the drought of 1983 in south-eastern Hungary.
