Electron Coherence in Quantum Well Intersubband Transitions
Chapter
Abstract
Absorption is a fundamental limitation in coherent light generation in both atomic and semiconductor media. In ordinary lasers, the so-called population inversion requirement is a direct consequence of stimulated absorption that accompanies emission. In nonlinear devices such as sum-frequency generators or parametric amplifiers, absorption determines the maximum possible conversion efficiency or parametric gain. Eliminating the stimulated absorption without affecting the emission properties, would remove these basic restrictions and lead to optical devices with novel properties.
