Abstract

LATE in 1648 the small town of Schoonhoven petitioned for the right to nominate a permanent representative to the Admiralty of Amsterdam. The States of Holland were unenthusiastic: an expansion of the admiralty boards was not, they thought, in the national interest and now that the war was over the task of these boards would become lighter.1
