Hypertension due to Infused Vasocontrictor Agents

Abstract

Acute infusions have been used to demonstrate the vasoconstrictor potency of angiotensin II, norepinephrine, and vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone). It follows that chronic administration might produce sustained hypertension, but this has not been the case in each instance. Continuous infusion of angiotensin, even at relatively low rates, produces sustained hypertension. Continuous infusion of even maximal amounts of norepinephrine in dogs produces at best a moderate sustained increase in pressure; blood pressure in humans may be more sensitive to catecholamine producing tumors. Vasopressin infusion initially elevates arterial pressure but the response wains.
