Abstract

Almost all young children are affected by this common and well nigh inevitable syndrome (Figure 13.1). The clinical types do not mirror the likely causes (see p. 106). This leads to confusion of nomenclature and uncertainties in management. The distinct clinical types are:
  • coughs, colds and catarrh

  • croup

  • acute sore throats

  • acute chest infections

  • earache
