Abstract
These two case histories may be read as an apologia for the sometimes self-indulgent practising of autecological investigation. Studies of single species, unless carried out in a rigorously comparative frame of reference, may not repay the effort expended. In these two cases the species selected are representative of wider themes, and each study ought to stimulate further work.
