Having joined Cambridge University Observatory as a graduate student in 1948, I first heard of the International Astronomical Union from those who had returned with enthusiasm from the Zürich General Assembly of that year. It became possible at Zürich for former colleagues from before the prolonged period of the Second World War, 1939-45, to meet again in amity and look forward to renewal of astronomical work as an international enterprise and to its future development in whatsoever way might be contrived.
