Risk Assessment for Chemicals & Radionuclides: Some Characteristics, Similarities and Differences
Abstract
Risk assessment is an important tool in the evaluation of potential harm related to environmental contamination, and may be used to develop criteria for remedial actions at contaminated sites of many types. The environmental risk assessment process for chemicals or for radionuclides involves consideration of exposure potential and dose/response for biological effects. These two components are combined to develop a quantitative or qualitative measure of range and degree of projected adverse effects. Methods have been developed to assess such risks which, while similar, are different in practice and in their endpoints. Risk assessment can be used in conjunction with other techniques, such as risk management, to deal with practical issues at radiologically and chemically contaminated sites. This paper presents, in an abbreviated way, principles, similarities and differences of risk evaluation in these two related areas.
