Abstract

The Energy Environmental and Technological Investigations Centre (CIEMAT), is the inheritor of the Junta de Energia Nuclear (JEN), which in 1982 comprised 39 radioactive facilities and five nuclear facilities engaged in research on the different stages of the nuclear fuel cycle. One of the nuclear facilities, an experimental nuclear reactor, JEN1, was mainly devoted to personal training and medical radioisotope generation. This reactor had thermal power of 3 MW. The first criticality was reached on 18 July 1958. The JEN1 continued operations until 1984 when it was stopped for security systems updating. Three years later (1987), the JEN1 was stopped by a governmental decision
