Abstract

Phototrophic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides strain RV is an effective biotechnological producer of hydrogen gas (1, 2). Recent works also indicate high potential of the strain to accumulate poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) (3, 4). Both PHB accumulation and H2 evolution represent alternative ways for discharging excess reducing power of the cell (5, 6). Thus, the knowledge on regulation of both processes would be advantageous in biotechnological practice for applying conditions favoring for elevated yields of either H2, or PHB. On the other hand, it is reasonably practical to use bacterial biomass derived from H2 production as a source of PHB, and conditions to combine both production processes should be determined.
