Dynamic Behaviour of Rockfill Dam

Abstract

It is usually well recognized that earth and rockfill dams can be constructed on even softer foundation compared with concrete dams. In the earthquake regions there have been reported many examples of disastrous raptures of earth dams on soft foundation conditions. Most failures were caused by slope failure induced by seismic ground motion.The loss of freeboard due to compaction of dam materials and consolidation of the foundation were also major causes of the overtopping of dams. The possible ways in which an earthquake may cause the failure of an earth dam proposed by H.B.Seed are as listed in Table 1.
