Holocene Glacial History of the Hörgárdalur Area, Tröllaskagi, Northern Iceland
Chapter
Abstract
Radiocarbon dating, tephrochronology and lichenometry are used to determine the Holocene glacial history of the Hörgárdalur area, Tröllaskagi. Glacial advances at around 4,275B.P. and 1,000 B.P. have been identified in Bægisárdalur, whereas in Barkárdalur pre-‘Little Ice Age’ advances are recognised between 2,240–1,835 B.P. and shortly before 1,555 B.P. During the ‘Little Ice Age’ there were a series of advances in both valleys between the mid-18th century and the first half of the 20th century, with a further advance in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
