Abstract

Two different RS aluminium alloys have been studied in the as extruded condition. One alloy was rich in Si content, whereas the other did not contain any Si. The work is focusing on the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures and the low cycle fatigue behaviour at room temperature. Both alloys maintain a major part of their strength up to 300°C. The constant plastic strain fatigue tests showed that both alloys had different response to cyclic plastic deformation at the various Δεp’s studied. This effect caused the Cyclic Stress Strain Curve to be sigmoidal in shape, and could be divided into three different regimes. Although some qualitative insight into the fatigue mechanisms in these type of alloys has been obtained, a lot of work need to be done in order to establish fundamental knowledge about the micromechanisms involved.
