Variables affecting cardiac output in obesity and diabetes
Abstract
In 1933, Smith and Willius first showed that mean weight of the heart was greater in obese subjects than in normal hearts (376 g versus 272 g) and in those patients that were both obese and hypertensive, the mean weight was even greater at 467 g [1]. The increased heart size associated with human obesity has been attributed to both an increased adiposity of the heart and ventricular hypertrophy [2, 3, 4]. In humans, two distinct patterns of fatty heart have been described. Lipid can accumulate in the cytoplasm [1] and fatty infiltration also occurs with accumulation of adipose tissue in the subepicard-ium and interstitially in the myocardium [1], particularly in the right ventricle and atrioventricular sulci [1, 5].
