Reinforcements for Thermoplastics

  • Trevor F. Starr

Abstract

As noted in the Directory section of this Databook - and other than in respect of perhaps “Milled Fibres” & “Chopped Strands”, where the general classification “Glass Fibre Materials for the Composites Industry” may not be strictly correct, (but grouped here for convenience) - it is likely that many of the continuous types of reinforcement listed in Section 2, “Reinforcements for Thermosets”, could equally be employed with thermoplastic matrices. The use of the latter with a longer or ‘continuous’ glass reinforcement, is not only less in comparison to the thermosets, but must still be considered a relatively recent development. Those using, or wishing to employ, a thermoplastic matrix with those glass fibre reinforcements which are longer than milled fibres or chopped strands, or of a ‘continuous’ nature - of whatever type - should therefore seek further advice from their suppliers.
