Abstract

We have calculated the electronic structure in a series of disordered Ag Mg alloys. We find that there are well-defined, parallel regions of Fermi surface in the 〈110〉 directions that can give rise to concentration waves (as first proposed by Györffy and Stocks in Cu-Pd alloys). We show that the vector spanning such regions is directly related to the positions of satellite peaks observed in the electron diffuse scattering and that the calculated variation of the peak splittings with Mg content is in excellent agreement with the experimentally measured values.
